SATA fails to format in Win2000
just bought a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus10 200GB SATA but I can not get it to work in Windows 2000 in my system. My computer system conatins the following: MB : ABIT KT7-RAID HDD : one (1) 20GB HDD, three (3) 200GB HDD, one (1) CDROM The RAID option is turned off in the BIOS. IDE Primary Master : 20GB HDD (boot device with Win2000) IDE Primary Slave : CDROM IDE Secondary Master : 200GB HDD IDE Secondary Slave : 200GB HDD EIO 2 Channels Serial ATA PCI Host Controller Card (DM-8301 and the non-RAID version). I have connected the Maxtor to channel 0 (first one) to the above mentioned controller card. At startup the system finds all four IDE drives and it also finds the Maxtor HDD correctly on the first channel. All drives are recognized with correct size (including SATA). The I use Windows 2000 Disk Management program (found by clicking Settings then Control Panel then Administrative Tools then Computer Management). I put on ID on it (as required by Win2000), then create partition (primary partition on a basic volume) and then try to format using NTFS and default allocation unit size. It continues up to 99% and then an error message comes from "Logical Disk Manager" saying "The format failed to complete successfully". Then I tried using Maxtor MaxBlast3 and it did not report any errors (carried out all creation and formatting without problems). But it could not use the drive, it seemed like it was not any file system on it. Then I did a low level format (full, not quick) using Maxtor Powermax 4.21 (i.e. the one supporting SATA). Went to Win2000 Disk Management program, and tried the above mentioned procedure again but with exactly the same result. I have the latest Win2000 service pack installed and have also set the registry value EnableBigLba to 1. The two other 200GB HDD works fine so this should not cause any problems. No info could be found in Microsoft Knowledge DB regarding SATA and 48-bit LBA but according to www.48bitlba.com it is the same requirements on IDE ATA as SATA drives regarding the 48-bit LBA issue. Can you please help me in this matter, I really need help here! Best regards, Henrik p.s I might missed some vital system information but please ask and I will send any information necessary. d.s Henrik Johannisson wrote:

I may have missed it, but I don't see you > mention loading the SATA driver. started the computer and Win2000 found new hardware and asked kindly about driver files. I directed Win2000 to look at the CD shipped with the controller card. It went fine and installed driver routines version something.47 IIRC. When looking in the hardware device list, under SCSI, the controller card is listed without any yellow exlamation mark. When choosing properties of the controller card, you can see the Maxtor HHD under Devices. I also tried to update to the newest drivers from the controller card manufacturer, it was something.52 IIRC but it didn't work better. When asking Windows Update to find newer version it actually found something.57 but no improvement. There is one irritating thing, and that is it took almost 4 hours to get the controller card to find the harddisk in Win2000. I installed, reinstalled, updated drivers, removed card, added card, deleted old driver files etc etc and finally it was able to find the harddisk. Unfortunately I don't know what I did in order for Win2000 and controller card to find it, so everytime I change drivers there is a big hazzle of removing and adding for a couple of hours until the controller card finds the harddisk. This info might help, since it shouldnt be like that. Seems something is really wrong.... /Henrik

And that was true, I checked it later and it was the same. And of course I answered no and quit the program. After that the controller card did not respond at all meaning I could not boot at all, not evev get the computer to boot from example a floppy. Brought back the controller card to the shop (since it obviously was something wrong with it) and since I needed a controller card fast I took what he had in the shop. He actullay found some Vantec Serial Ata (one interal, one external), and what the heck, I try it. Put it in, fired up the computer, and starting Win2000. Worked directly, didnt even had to install drivers, since that new card also using Silicon Image 3112 (as everyone else) so Win2000 took my latest installed drivers for the old controller card and everything works perfectly. To summarize, it was 99% something hardware problem with that controller card causing my problems. The 1% left was that the controller card didnt like my computer configuration. Thanks, Henrik
