Why can't I play newer DVDs?
is Windows 2000 with the latest updates, and I am using Power DVD. I have tried an LG drive and also a Sony, and have the same problem with both. The DVD starts, but only gets as far as the FBI warning. This does not happen with older movies on DVD. Would this be a hardware or software issue, and is there something guaranteed to fix this? It would play on an older DVD player though. If there's additional noise and/or vibration when you try to play the problem DVDs, that may be the cause of them not playing on your unit too. Occasionally (very rarely), I find powerDVD's automatic region detection can get confused with some discs and it would stall the movie at the FBI warning or show a region mismatch warning. No clue what the trigger is, as it seems fairly random, but if this is the same problem, forcing the region code in the player will fix it -- at least until the next problem disc crops up. You can do it with DVD Genie (freeware, you can find a URL via google). --------------------------------------------- MCheu MCheu wrote:

As it is, it's way too easy to get the wrong idea. I didn't mean to suggest that going to a region free firmware was a solution. Rather that it might be a potential cause of the problem if you're already using a region free firmware or software. The player would get confused on occasion with some discs, requiring that the region code be manually set in the player. That's what I was suggesting. nooobody wrote:

It seems that most "real" DVD players simply ignore the errors while computers get bogged down by them. It might prove impossible in the future to play (or copy) DVDs on anything other than approved players. If you want to find out if the disc in question has such errors you can download the free DVD Decrypter. A look at the log it creates will tell you what the status of the disc is.
