Hi all.  I'm looking for some software that can A) extract a series of
individual frames from a video file; and B) combine a series of image
files into a video file.

For instance, I'd like to take a short WMV file, and extract each
frome to a JPG.  Conversely, I'd like to take a directory full of JPGs
(all same resolution) and combine them to a WMV.  Ideally, it will
support the major file formats; WMV, MPG, AVI, etc for the video; JPG,
PNG, BMP, etc for the images.

Can anyone tell me of a decent program (commercial or other) that they
know to be capable of doing this, and is reliable and supported?

Thx.

I have done both of those things with Womble's MVW (Mpeg Video Wizard).

Most of the nonlinear editing software packages will let you define a
set span of a video and export the frames to a folder in one of
several formats. On the mac side try Final Cut Express.

Sorry, sent before finishing. The process works the same in reverse;
the NLE software can import a folder full of sequentially-numbered
frames in most still image formats and will lay them ontoa  video
track for you. The only caution is that the first frames start with
enough zeroes. Meaning, first frame of 300 should start with 001, then
002,003, etc.  If you start with just a single digit, those frames get
placed out of order.

On the PC side, Vegas is very popular.

And Vegas does all that (and much more!!) extremely well :-)
If the full version is too rich (i.e. $$$) for you, there's also Vegas
Movie Studio.  It's somewhat limited in comparison to the full version
but it will still do everything you want to do and it's around $100.
