camcorder reviews- should offer comparisons of actual video

I've been reading camcorder reviews in many magazines over the past several
months- but it's impossible to make any decisions without seeing actual
videos. I'd think that with all the You Tube type web sites, some of these
reviewers could offer clips from different cameras- taken at the same place
at the same time.

So, I wonder why the reviewers aren't doing this?

Youtube limits video to a maximum resolution of 360 x 480, heavily
compressed to Flash and, almost certainly, temporally compressed.  The
result gives absolutely no indication of the quality (or lack of quality) of
the video.

This is absolutely correct. And, keep in mind that magazine "reviews" are
just another form of disguised advertising for the gear manufacturers, so
you will never see any important deficiencies pointed out in them. And,
in the magazines, "new" is always presented as "better", which is often
not true.

"PTravel" points out why this wouldn't help - and I once offered short
uncompressed clips on a disk from my test footage from the different
camcorders compared using the same subjects and lighting, and had
no takers. I have camcorder comparison articles on my web site at
http://www.donferrario.com/ruether/articles.html#video which still
frame-grabs from each camcorder for comparison (be sure to see also
the article on video imaging faults, with its key to which camcorders
"messed up" the most in each fault category...;-). While none of the
camcorders is still made in exactly the same form as the ones
reviewed and compared, you should still find things of interest. BTW,
the reviews that used to annoy me the most were the ones that
"showed where all the buttons were", but gave no real information
about the quality of the performance.

Wow, Dave, you've been a busy guy!

BTW, your link doesn't seem to come up to the "#video" part- but I found it
easily enough- and if I added that to the URL once your page comes up, it
would go to the right place.

How about a review of the Canon HV-20 and comparable cameras?   Such as the
Sony HDR-HC7. If God told you to choose between the 2, which would you
choose? <G>

Hmmm, thanks - but it works properly on my IE browser...;-) What do
you use? I'm currently reworking the "articles" page, but it will look
about the same afterward.

I'm out of video, since I can't hand-hold cameras steady anymore, although
(good, affordable...!) HD may still be tempting, using a very smooth tripod
I've kept. BTW, I reviewed on the web site camcorders I borrowed or
(more often) owned, so if you want to see my reviews of the above, I will
give you the address where you can send them (assuming, of course, that
I can then keep them....! ;-).

Dunno. I hear good things about the Canon, but having cameras in hand
and directly comparing them tells so much more........;-)
