restoring all functions in nightshot mode? Sony Handycam

I recently purchased the Sony DCR-HC28. Although it has nightshot, the
exposure is not adjustable and I'd like to find out if it's possible to
rectify this. I read about various tricks that could be performed to "trick"
the normal mode into IR without actually going into nightshot mode, but
neither the "microswitch" or "halfway switch" mods have worked. One option
I've read about recently suggested removing the IR filter. I actually did
this (it was scary!), but the result was blurred images, so I replaced the
filter. I read that the filter could be replaced with a blank, but I'd
rather not open up the camera again. I've come across a mod that involves
covering up one of the wires in the ribbon cable that leads from the lens
assembly to the main board, but this mod was for a different camera so I
don't know if it would work or not.

The final mod I mentioned above would be the most appealing- and the
cheapest- if I could find out whether or not it works. I don't know about
the IR filter replacement with a blank- firms that have the blanks seem to
want a high price for them. There must be a way to trick the camera though
as when it goes into nightshot there is no IR filter in the path and yet it
remains focused.

Any suggestions? This is a nice little camera that I would hate to return.
My only other choice is to try and find an original Sony from the late 90's,
but... well camera age starts becoming a factor.

Thanks in advance,
Art
