Are there any firms that convert ancient 8 mm home videos to DVD? I have
dozens of old family videos from the '60s and '70s, each 8 minutes long.

There are too many such companies to list them all.  Everyone claims
to have great quality, but not all of them really do.  So shop around
before you pick.  My personal favorite:  www.moviestuff.tv

A couple of years ago I had 8mm reels converted to VHS tapes.
I took them to a local camera store.  They charged something like 10
cents per foot of film.

I got back 2 tapes and 2 five inch reels of film.  They spliced the
smaller reels together to make it easier for their automated process.
