NB: Confused: Which to buy DVD Recorder or Writer

I am confused. I would like burn home movies from my Sony Camcorder
via
Firewire.  Someone told me that the dvd quality is inferior if I burn
movies
on a DVD Writer (was thinking of a Pioneer DVR-108) and I would need
to use
bitsetting for compatibility or buy a DVD recorder with Firewire
inputs.

How much of a differerence is there in quality between the two?  I
recall
last year i burned a VCD and the quality was very poor compared to a
commercially produced VCD.

I also don't wish to make this a "make work" project.  If using a DVD
writer is better than what software do I need to use to transfer and
burn to decent quality dvd?

Any comments?

Thanks

False

There's no quality difference between computer DVD drives and
"stand-alone" DVD recorders, as long as the bit-rate and encoder
quality settings are comparable.

DVD Workshop 2.0  by Ulead software. There are many other good
DVD authoring software packages available,  but I like DVDWS
because it has facilities for capturing, menu & chapter creation,
..AVI -> MPEG2 file conversion (more than acceptable encoder quality),
and basic disc burning.

Are you sure, I was told that dvd recorders have their own hardware
encoder or decoder but a burner has to use software decoding/encoding
and therefore, the quality will suffer on the writer unless one has a
very robust systemand it will be
noticable when played in a dvd player?   I also understand when doing
software rendering that Windows is very prone to hiccups and this will
also affect the final product.

That's not what the guy at Future Shop said.  I guess the only way I will
know for sure is if I buy a burner from Future Shop or Best Buy.  If the
quality of the dvd recorder output  is the same as the burner then I keep
the burner, if not, then I return the dvd recorder.

There is an issue (in my opinion) if you are trying to do too many
steps in one hit.

There is some software that will attempt to take your files in one
format, compress them and write to DVD in one step. If the writer
completes writing its buffer before the processor has processed enough
of the files you get a fatal error and have to start over.

The package I am using creates the dvd on hard disk and lets you
preview it on the PC before buring it.

Also be sure you are comparing  things of the same quality.   The DVD
recorder that takes a composite input and burns your tv program in real
time is a bit different than your $59 dvd writer on special with
rebates.
