My company just issued me a laptop with built in wifi. When I took it
home and booted up, I received notification of a wireless signal and if
I wanted to connect.
I did and got a very weak signal, around 6 to 10%.
I am assuming this is a public hotspot because the ssid is brodcasted
and no encryption is used.
The SSID is linksys(common sense says it is a linksys router, right?)
and was wondering if I purchased a linksys repeater, would this work in
increasing my signal strength?

They have a new version of this card ("version 1A") but it's still
called the WL54G. It is a completely different card from the old
WL54G!!!! There is no Nitro support and no external antenna (the main
reason I ordered one).
What kind of idiots come out with a completely different product and
don't change the part number???

Is this a wireless problem or a general microsoft workgroup problem?
I have an ad-hoc workgroup of 3 computers all talking TCP/IP
wirelessly to a Linksys WRT54g (with no WINS server) and a WET54g
connected to an IP Cam.
The computers IP's are in the range 192.168.2.100 - 192.168.2.102 and
run XP Pro and 2000 Pro.
Under low network load all the computers can see each other and
everything is fine.
When the load is high (I have 6 Axis 2100 IP cams talking to the
server and using about 10-12M of the 54M bandwidth), the workgroup is
pretty much inaccessible. Somtimes the computers can see each other but
they cannot connect, sometimes they connect just fine and sometimes the
workgroup can only see its own computer.
Under very high load the computers cannot even be pinged but under low
load they are giving a 1ms ping time.
No matter what the load conditions, all computers can see the gateway
(192.168.2.254 - WRT54g) and connect to the internet fine.
Am I barking up the wrong tree? Should I run the workgroup
differently? Should I get rid of Linksys?
I am unsure how an ad-hoc workgroup actually works out what computers
are connected. I am guessing they are continually sending messages
around the network. Are they TCP/UDP or something proprietry?
Anyone else solved this problem? Thanks for any help.

I require a card that has the following features:
- b/g
- latest security standards (WPA-AES I guess)
- good Windows and Linux support (I suppose this limits choices to
Prism chipsets primarily) and no problems with common apps like
Netstumbler
- external antenna connector (MC or whatever)
I've already spent hours searching for such a card. Can't find even
one that supports all requirements. Compex is close but apparently
only has WEP. Proxim is also close but Linux support is weak.
Help!

I'm using a Netgear WGR614 Router (on xp machine) with a WG111 wireless
USB adapter (on 98se machine). I have been using WEP security for weeks
with no problems and no disconnects. I wanted to start using WPA
security. It works fine for a few hours and then I get on-off-on-off
(green-red-green-red) connections. The only way I've been able to fix
it is to enter new a passphrase in the router and copy the numbers into
the wireless adapter. I know that the passphrase has a "key life timer"
but isn't that supposed to be an automatic change? I'm not even sure if
that's the problem. Is there something I'm doing wrong? There must be a
way to keep the WPA connection alive for more than a few hours. Should
I just go back to WEP? Please help. Thanks.
