Just a heads up
I work at Best Buy and priced "Hawaii" today ($9.99) for sale next
Tuesday.
Looked at the running time and it is 2 hours 48 mins (168 mins!!!!)
rather than the 3 hour and 10 min running time
Looks like M-G-M screwed up this one like they did "The Alamo" ie
releasing TRUNCATED versions so they can get Featurettes on the DVD
along with the movie
I spoke to some A__H___ at M-G-M and he stated that most consumers
prefer the shorter version with featurettes than the longer theatrical
versuion without featurettes.
I told him exactly what he was and also let him know that WE PREFER
the ORIGINAL theatrical version of films and NOT TRUNCATED!!!

From Amazon.com:

I just called MGM Home Video, and they told me the running time of the
feature on the upcoming DVD release is the 189 minute Roadshow version.
Amazon's running time must be based on the original CBS/Fox release 20 years
ago.

According to the reviewer " It's impossible to tell if the original
189-minute print doesn't exist anymore, or if MGM felt that today's
ADD audiences couldn't handle a film that long. But "Hawaii" will
leave viewers wondering whether the flaws in the film are a result of
contemporary editors trying to fit it onto a single disc, or the
director's flawed vision. "

Yet TCM showed the 189 min. version last month!!!!!!!!!

The print does exist !!!!!!!!!!!

WHAT IS WRONG WITH M-G-M?????

Other than they are now owned by SONY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, a print *did* exist at one time, anyway. I'm sure you know that
TCM doesn't roll film.

Aside from that, I doubt it's a question of whether a print exists, but whether
the elements are in any kind of acceptable condition. I've no doubt that this is
a situation similar to THE ALAMO and IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD, where
there are decent transfers of the longer versions done for laserdisc, but the
elements were deemed unfit for use in creating new transfers for DVD.

One supposes that they could simply use the LD transfer, but imagine the
sh*tstorm when consumers discovered that the resulting DVD wasn't anamorphic
(EXODUS, anyone?).

JMK
It's definitely the edited version (which I posted about here months
ago).  Just another reason to hate MGM/UA, for those who were so quick
to jump on the bashing bandwagon for those of us returning defective
DVDs under the class action suit.  It's amazing to me how MGM & WB can
coexist--WB always (or at least almost always) does superlative jobs
with their DVD releases, including many gems in the MGM library (I bet
if the WB side had released "Hawaii," it would have been a 2 disc
special edition).  MGM/UA just doesn't seem to give a s***, so why
should we?
